How would I go about getting options for paying these policies myself now?

You would have to take out policies for yourself. Sometimes you can get your last provider to do a policy which does not have exclusions, but most will be with previous history exclusions.

Some of the comparison sites give quotes from multiples suppliers for both types of cover you have mentioned.

Thanks. Will try again on a comparison site. First one I tried wanted someone to phone me. Don’t want sales called until I have a general idea of costs first…

There are no true comparison sites for these types of products, the aggregators simply have done a deal with a broker who expose their panel of insurers in a similar way an aggregator would show all the different sellers.

The sales call will be with the broker rather than the underlying insurer so speaking to them still gives you a range of options and prices

They won't be able to give you any real idea of the costs without knowing your medical history.  If you haven't yet left the job which provided healthcare, or recently left, they may permit you to take on that policy on the same terms as when employed there.  I did that with one job although I left due to redundancy which may or may not have made a difference.  First year was cheap(ish) but still rocketed in price from Year2.
