Credit rating affected by incorrect arrears

I had a Debenhams card and paid off the balance 3 years ago. Over the past few months I've had let's from NewDay saying I owed £4 and each month was accruing interest. Thought it was a scam till I rang them and disputed it. The agent told me she'd remove the debt and apologised for the inconvenience. I then discovered she'd duplicated not removed the debt and it was still active. I called again and they closed the account, apologised again and removed the debt.
I've just gone to a mortgage advisor and it's flagged up on my account that I'm a bad payer. I've spoken to Newday and they said there's nothing they can do. This poxy amount that I never owed has the potential to have a massive impact on my life and future home. Anyone any advice, please?

Do you accept you owe the money and it was legitimate but they cancelled it as a gesture of goodwill or do you believe it was not a legitimate debt? Former, unfortunately you're stuck with until it disappears, latter you need to complain formally to Debenhams
Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
