I have been using MSE for a while now but this is one of my first posts so apologies if this is in the wrong place.
Basically, i have got myself a mortgage and i am due to move in to my new home on the 8th January.
The thing is i am very scared about getting in to debt and need as much help as possible. I am only 22 and this will be my first home so money is tight. What's the best electric/water company to use? What's the best telephone/broadband and tv service to use? So many questions that i really don't know - i have had a read through bestbuy articles but don't understand how electric works
Here's hoping you can give me some valuable information.
Thanks
Damian

Hello there,
I am not the best person to advise you on gas and elec. but just wanted to wish you well with your new house.
My main advice would be not to try and do everything in your house at once.
Decide some priorities after the main bills perhaps related to your hobbies or interests. ie if you are into music or football then save up and sort your music system or tv system first, or choose a room at a time and do that . Perhaps you can sort the living room or bedroom and then wait a while before doing the next one.
It is tempting to want everything new to start off, but if friends and family offer some furniture or things to get you started, then please consider them at least as a stop-gap even if they are not to your tastes. You can always replace them at a later date.
The very fact that you are asking advice is great and probably means you will do really well with your budgeting, so good luck and enjoy it, there is nothing quite like your first home.:hello:0 -
Hi!
You need to find out who the current suppliers are for the new property you're moving into.
On the day that you move in you need to :
-take a gas meter reading and an electricity meter reading.
-Call the supplier, inform them you've moved into a property they supply give them your details and the meter readings and they will set up an account in your name
Normally they will put you on their standard tariff, find out which one the cheapest tariff is (normall an online one) and go on that. It'll be worthwhile until you decide whether to switch to another supplier.
Personally I'd advise you stick with the company that supply the house until you get your first bill as that will give you an idea of your usage which you can then input into a comparison site.
Hope that helps, and good luck in your new home!:D0
