Which Discovery??
Options
Now 72. Have a new 'old mans' car. Still keep looking for an Austin Champ (1st car at 18). Always loved them. £250 then, 22-17 now ! Too much for me now. Mainentance/heavy... Have had older Range rovers and Landrovers (hybrid/bobtail) over the years.Last was a Disco 1. I want a Disco again, but of what mark?
Spend extra on a good Disco 2? (are these air or spring? - avoid ALL air suspension ones). Cost- Up to 15k. No offroading required. £5000 MLS PA. Lost on knowledge of these.Lost on ebay bidding. Dealer or private? Petrol/Diesel - either. Thoughts or recoms please. TIA.

If you can't keep up with maintenance, you don't want a discovery!Like anything old with Landrover on the back they break all the time, but they usually keep going.I've had a series IIA, a series III, a 200TdI 110 and a "Classic" Rangerover, and they all needed the spanners out pretty much every week and the welder every MOT- didn't yours need it too? Also Landrover prices seem to have 1 too many digits in front of the decimal place at the moment, a £400 wreck is now on sale for £4000.Get a Suzuki Jimny. Pretty much what an evolved series 1 would have been, easy to park, the heater works, power steering, coil springs, functioning electrics, Japanese reliability (but avoid 2005-2008 manual gearbox due to bearing failure).I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)

My neighbour's Disco was a nightmare at less than 3 years old.
I was woken on numerous occasions (I was a shift worker) to an idling tow truck trying to coax it onto the recovery vehicle from his awkward driveway.
Get an old Land Cruiser !1 -

Think of it less as transport, and more as a Meccano set for adults.1 -
I bought a 2005 Discovery 3 (2.7L diesel automatic) about this time last year. Fantastic vehicle and would replace it with another one immediately if it died tomorrow! At that age, you can now pick up a reasonable one for about £2,500. Air suspension is actually excellent and not that complicated to repair if it is needed. With a bit more cash you can go to a later D3 or a D4, which everyone says is even better. But a good option is to buy the early D3 and keep a cash reserve for any major repairs. As with all old vehicles, rust is the main issue to watch out for, but if you buy one from further south in the UK that helps. I'd sign up to the Disco3/Disco4 forum and watch out for one of the enthusiasts selling theirs - where you will be more likely to get an honest statement of what has been done and what the potential problems might be.0
