It's very difficult to tell - it depends entirely on the MCC used by the retailer.
As a very general, rough, rule-of-thumb, if you're buying from an online retailer who sells nothing but gift cards then there's a high chance it will be classed as cash.  If you're buying from somewhere like Next or M&S or the like, you'll probably find it's classed as a standard purchase.  But unfortunately it's nigh-on impossible to tell for certain.  Safest to use a debit card.

I've used Amex Nectar on TopGiftcards, and that was treated as a purchase.

It's quite unusual for these voucher buying sites to accept Amex, but that one does.

what a pain this has turned out to be, nothing to do with creditcard but on the subject with spotify
and a tip for anyone using it , if you on the basic package (no audiobook) then upgrade back to premium before you put a giftcard in
as you can see whats happened to me, i was on chat with spotify for about an hour, so they cancel my future payments, then had to upgrade me to premium and now too many attempts to reg my card i have to wait 24hrs
my current payment has covered me for another 3 weeks so will try again tomorrow, will keep you post

this is now becoming a pain to register my giftcard, do i have any rights as i got this on paypal on my amex card
it was £99 and its still not working
this is all done on spotify site logged in and in there live chat, i did try and register the card about 9am this morning after waiting aprox 17hrs, they did say yesterday wait 24hrs which would be about 3pm today so i jumped the gun and tried to register it and the acc still wont accept the code, so i told chat this, they have now said the FULL 24hrs must start again, so that will take me till 9.30 am tomorrow morning, i will wait untill 10am tomorrow and then try the code and if its still not working where do i stand

I had a bad experience trying to use a Spotify gift card too, but I bought it from Perks at Work rather than PayPal.

If it doesn't work for you, go back to the merchant (PayPal Digital Gift Ideas) and ask for a refund.

check the terms of your agreement with AmEx, certainly on the class of card I have they dont have a "cash like" clause.

this is now out this world, i waited the full 24hrs as requested to register the giftcard, and again its been refused
i went straight into chat (history is present), and was informed to waiting another 7hrs
i said to the agent i will, but if that  dosnt work i am seeking a full refund, all her reply was have a nice day

so where do i start my complaint off is it direct with amex as there is a option on each transaction to dispute this transaction
or is it with paypal as its them i purchased it from

update i have lodged a dispute with paypal, will keep you updated
