Switching Joint Account

Joint accounts can only be switched to other joint accounts in the same names. She couldn't have opened a Nationwide joint account without your involvement, unless she was acting fraudulently.

But as for the switch itself, it's a bit of a grey area I think. I forget off the top of my head the exact process for switching to Nationwide, but I'm fairly sure she could just lie on the declaration and say she has all account holder's permission to do the switch. You should have gotten correspondence from your old bank though before the switch completed, which should have given you the option to object to the switch.

You'd need to check the relevant Ts & Cs for the accounts concerned, but it's not uncommon for banks to permit instructions relating to joint accounts to be given by either party, rather than requiring both.  For opening a new joint account, one account holder would need to explicitly confirm that they're acting on behalf of both with permission though....
