Student Loan overpayment

Hi,
My sister is a doctor, she had paid off her student loan in full but just realised that they have taken more money than they should have. When she spoke to payroll they said they can’t do anything because the Student Loan Company (SLC) has to stop it from their side. When she called the SLC they said the opposite - that payroll needs to stop it. She had overpaid by two whole years! Eventually the SLC accepted that she had overpaid and suggested to send her a cheque for a very small amount but she is certain that the amount is a LOT higher. Something like £1500 vs £15000! The SLC also told her the they had returned some of the money and that it was with the Inland Revenue.

The Student Loans company also changed the online statements but she has kept all her paper copies thankfully. I don’t know who the soft ones are - the Student Loan Company or Inland Revenue?!
Can anyone be kind enough to offer some help and guidance please? This is so incredibly unfair.
Thank you

Unusual that she could overpay by 2 years. The SLC write to you when you get to the last 12 months and suggest you pay by DD to avoid this exact situation.
Also they issue annual statements which she seems to have so why didnt she know....
Anyway. What a mess and going to be a complicated one to sort out due to the tax implications.
She need to work out exactly what she is owed in refunds get that into a spreadsheet or something. Once she is 100% sure she needs to call inland revenue and see what they know. Do they really have a refund of any description.
Then put in a formal complaint to SLC. They are abysmal at communicating though it's been 8 years since I last dealt with them they don't do anything at speed.
But she needs to make sure she knows exactly what she is trying to get back before she does any of it.1 -
I’ll ask the Forum Team to move this to the Student Board.
It seems something has gone wrong here. I do wonder if she has calculated the interest on the loan correctly. The rates can change frequently and it is difficult to keep up. It’s good that she has all the paperwork. 3 key components to check: loan amount, plan type and interest rates.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages, student & coronavirus Boards, money saving boards. Thank you for your replies!
I wonder if it’s better to get an accountant to work out what she’s paid the Student Loans Company. She doesn’t have all her payslip, she needs to requests as many as she can get and then see what she’s paid on there. This is going to be a challenge. As HampshireH mentioned - it’s a mess!!0 -
You can make a complaint or request for refund etc... via gov.uk regarding student loans company (gov.uk/contact-student-loans-company)
