Problem setting up a Starling account

I wondered if anyone else had any problems setting up a Starling account?

I used to have Monzo but closed it when doing an account switch. A friend recommended Starling and due to go away soon so thought it would be good to have for use abroad and as an everyday spending account.

I did the application via the app and got a  notice about reviewing the application and then you will be invited to apply. Which I thought was strange but nothing more.

Today they said they can’t open an account for me but basically can’t tell me why.

I called, thinking I might have made a mistake with something or was there an issue I didn’t know about. They said they’d ask the onboarding team to get in touch.

They did, and they just repeated the same message. I’m confused (and a bit disappointed) but wondered if anyone else had encountered this?

Credit file is all ok, no other issues I can think of.

They just don't want your business, for whatever reason. And they don't have to tell you why.

I know - I was just asking in case people had any experiences similar, just so I might try and find out more.
  • Alas, you will never know why they have declined to offer you an account.

Experiences of others will not advance that ambition either, unfortunately.

Just move on and seek an account elsewhere, such as Chase, for example.
  • What do you mean by "credit file"?
There are lots of credit check and verification agencies out there so it might be that your details are incorrect with the one that Starling used.

With paperless billing it's easy to end up with lots of direct debits still linked to a previous address.

I'd try to investigate and fix things. Personally I don't think starling arbitrarily decline people. But there are lots of rules about what they can't disclose.
  • Yes I have a Starling account but they refuse to open one for my wife, which is a pain because we wanted a joint account, which Chase don't do. Starling have been otherwise been quite useful in having a Euro account ... trouble is the Euros I have in that is actually joint money.
