I'm not sure how correct this is but I was chatting to a taxi driver and he informed me his wife had passed away and he was able to claim back her National Insurance Contributions that she had paid when living and he received his first payment in a lump sum
He said he had been advised by emailing this site.
Cant find any information about this.
Id have thought that when living and paying National Insurance Contributions if you died your widow wouldn't be able to make a claim back on the money you had paid.
But he was adamant

Sorry, I don't believe that's true.
Depending on her circumstances her estate may have been due an income tax refund for the year she died, but not NI.
Other possibilities are a death in service benefit, or part of any pension she had built up.1 -
He probably got bereavement allowance, it's not a refund of NI but does depend on having an NI record.
