I have been with EDF for about 5 years now, I have electric central heating by way of storage heaters and have a daytime tariff and a 7 hour off peak tariff for heating consumption split across approximately 2 pm to 4 pm and 1 am to 6 am. Having had this type of heating for over 35 years now across two properties I know the afternoon boost for the heaters is absolutely essential.
I have just had an email from EDF informing me that I must have a smart meter fitted in the next 12 months as the RTS system is being withdrawn in 2025 and without this my Horstmann meter (which has been faultless for 25 years) cannot function. I was not too concerned about this but if I had not scrolled right to the bottom I would have missed the information which stated with a smart meter my off peak tariff would be one time period which was 1 am to 8 am.
Are there any forum members with the same heating as I have and are also EDF customers who have contacted EDF on this proposed  inefficient, costly 7 hour single time period, if so please post your experiences / reply from EDF. This will be a great help when I or other forum member contact them, thank you.
Good morning, we have 15 flats with electric only heating and meters that are that old with complex meter tariffs such as you mention plus economy 10.

It is a challenge but if you get through to the right team at EDF they should be able to provide you with what you have now with a smart meter. We have had Meters replaced and they are still on economy 10 and what I call split economy 7 that you describe.

Just ask for the complex meter tariff team and don't give up and put in a complaint if necessary.

And always be nice to the people at the end of the phone.

They are just lowish paid employees who try to do the best they can in sometimes difficult circumstances.

I know personally how hard it is to separate the anger with a company from the conversation with call centre staff. I've learned to moderate my behaviour as much as possible to not frustrate the people that can hopefully help me.
PPI success. Banding success. Double Dip PCN cancelled! South facing solar (Midlands) and battery. Savings Session supporter (is it worth it now!?)
  • I really do not mean to offend anyone but at certain times of the year outside temperatures from double figures at midday can plummet to 6 degrees or lower by 6 pm and everything turns nice and white outside. With gas central heating one simply gives the thermostat a twirl for a heating boost but with electric storage heaters and no afternoon boost option you will be using daytime supplementary heating, which is just what the energy provider wants.
Unless you have personal experience on whether a home can be heated on 1 single block 7 hour charge posting that it can be and a two hour boost is not necessary is deceitful no matter how well intentioned.

I will contact EDF's complex meter department in time, maybe I should have started there first but I was hoping to glean some information from EDF customers here before that. Even after all this time from the introduction of smart meters people are still crying out for help in regard to being in a total mess billing wise since having a smart meter installed.
Maybe I'll contact Ed Milband our new energy czar I'm sure he will sort things out especially with the new energy company promised, If I get a positive response from EDF I will post it here but from the attached screen shot I am very doubtful, thank you.

Just so you know Ed Milliband is the czar behind smart meters and likely he will want to finish the job he started back then in the next 4 years.

If anything he will plough on even harder withheld smart meter roll out.

Thankfully 90% of people don't have issues with their in home displays or smart meters and I suspect out of that 10% it's actually 8% that just don't understand and to be honest have not had to understand when energy has been cheap in the past. That coupled with a need for schools to teach simple household budgeting.

Anyway I digress as it seems you have now got the knowledge of who you need to speak to in EDF and good luck with that.

Although probably not helpful, as an E7 customer with storage heaters that lose their heat by 9pm when it's very cold, I simply shift my day back by 2 hours in the depths of winter i.e. go to bed 2 hours earlier and get up earlier to compensate.
