Annual travel insurance extended stay

We have an annual travel policy which we have been very happy with for the last few years. We are visiting family in New Zealand, total trip is about 70 days, and we decided we would like to visit friends in the USA on the return journey.
The additional cost for visiting NZ only, would be about £135, to include a 4 day stop in the USA it increases to £490.
I have questioned the insurance provider and they say because I have to select Worldwide + USA for the whole 70 days it applies the USA additional premium to the whole 70 days, nothing they can do! Is there a cheaper solution? ( apart from not going to the US! )

As you've an annual travel policy. The cover applies to the remaining term of the policy not just the 70 days of the trip.0

You could take out a single-trip policy for this holiday.

I'd look into the cost of covering the USA stop separately. The problem you'll face is that the it's not a holiday starting in the UK so normal travel insurance won't apply, you should investigate insurance that allows you to start from a different place, which is sometimes a feature of backpacker insurance, World Nomads is often mentioned as a provider of this type of policy.

The problem is that most "normal" travel insurance is only valid for holidays that start and end in the UK, so if you get separate cover for your stay in the USA your "normal" insurance for the time in New Zealand might become invalid. Definitely a detail to check.1 -

The other option is to travel back via the UK, ie go the long way round then its two trips in quick succession. Just needs to be adjoining tickets rather than straight through.0 -
