It's cold but it's July - should I turn the heating on?

There is a reason someone invented thermostats.  It wasn't so that you are warm in January & freezing in July.  So my vote is for turning the heating on.

We've been firing up one of the stoves for a couple of hours on quite a few evenings. It doesn't really affect our fuel stock as it can use offcuts and bits of pruning etc.  It's 15°C in the sitting room just now, cool for July.

Minimum of 20.1°C over the last 7 days, so thermostat not calling for heat. Something to be said for good quality double glazing and plenty of insulation :)

No way - man up, put some warmer clothes - it's July, heating is NOT allowed
    I blame "Global Boiling". B)
I have a stored hot water system and the boiler/pump is timed to run for a short time each morning, for the hot water. No danger of the pump locking up, hopefully.
However, having a Y Plan system, I do run the heating once a month to actuate the three port valve which can seize through remaining in the h.w. position for a period.
I also go round all the thermostatic radiator valves and excercise those open to close and vice versa. The spindles in those can seize too.
But no, other than the above, the heating remains off for four or five months.

I didn't vote,as what's right for me and my circumstances isn't right for anybody else.
Alluded to by others, thats why we have correctly operating thermostats, set according to the needs/wants of the user concerned.
Living in southwest Scotland the heating "season" isn't really applicable.

Heating here is firmly off until October or hopefully November.  I am too busy to feel cold but I hope the sick & vulnerable are using whatever heat they need for their health.  My combi boiler briefly fires up the pump once a day to prevent seizure, but as thermostat is set to 10C no heating will kick in.
  • Of course you should, if you're cold you're cold, doesn't matter what time of year it is
I never turn my heating off.  Why should I; everything is thermostatically controlled?  If the house gets too cold then the heating comes on.  If the house is warm enough because it's warm outside then the heating stays off.  Either way, it's automatic.
I take exactly the same approach.

Even though it's cold, it's not cold enough for me to have the heating on. Make sure you let the sun shine in if you can and open the internal doors and it'll soon warm up your home.
Only if there actually IS some sun shining!
It’s barely stopped raining here this week.
It’s cold. Yesterday it was snowing in Glencoe.

I am in the ‘switch it on’ camp. And yes, my thermostat is doing that on my behalf. The thermometer is telling me the outdoor temperature is 13 degrees right now at 2.30pm and it certainly feels chilly.

Reluctantly yes. The heating was off but we were feeling chilly. Jumpers on the first occasion, but then I noticed the room stat was also demanding, so the heating was switched on. Thankfully demand has been low, but things are more comfortable.

Ours never goes off. It's on a thermostat, if it's cold enough it will come on.

We do not live in the dark ages, there is no need to be cold at home!
