Notice period for cancelling

I signed my daughter up for snowboarding lessons paying on 1st month by direct debit. As it was the middle of the month when she started I paid the pro rata amount until the end of the month using my card.
A few months down the line and she has decided she longer wishes to attend and I emailed to cancel her place and give 30 days notice. The provider says it is 30 days notice from the DD renewal date (1st of month) and I will have to pay the full month's amount, not a pro rata amount until 30 days from my notice given date (18th). How can this be allowed? Surely 30 days notice is 30 days notice?

Assuming you aren't claiming cancellation under distance selling etc then ultimately it comes down to their terms... some will be 30 days from the date of the cancellation others will require one full calendar month0
