Cancellation of not yet delivered order - company not responding - how long to wait?

I ordered an item online on Sunday advertised as "delivery within 5-7 day".
Received email confirmation of actual delivery date on Monday which won't work for me as too far out and I will be on holidays.
I tried calling several times on Monday in order to cancel, nobody answering phone. I emailed on Monday stating I would like to cancel the order. No response.
I tried calling again today, nobody answering. I followed up on my email from Monday, stating again I wish to cancel.
I don't want to be unreasonable obviously, but I'd also like to avoid that the item ends up being shipped in two weeks time when I stated unambiguously that I wished to cancel.
How long should I wait for a response before contacting my credit card company?
If the item does end up being shipped, will I be liable for shipping and/or return costs?

It depends on where you've ordered your item from and where in the world its coming from. Is it a reputable UK site being supplied from a UK warehouse, or a pretend UK site coming from overseas?0

It is a UK site with delivery from manufacturer. It looked reputable.
I have now finally had a response and order has now been cancelled, my last (strongly worded) email must have kicked them into action.

I'm not sure three working days is an excessive time to answer an email.1
