Paypal Invoice Received via Messenger - I have a query

I've received an invoice on my FB Messenger for something I want to purchase from Facebook Marketplace which is going to be posted
Can they send an invoice there as usually you give a seller your email address (I haven't done that) ?
I haven't clicked any links in the invoice as it seems a bit suspicious and thought I would come and ask here
Thanks in advance

Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.

I would never pay someone on Facebook marketplace through a link they sent me. Could well be a scam
Cash in hand or paypal through the website not friends and family

I would definitely err on the side of caution and ask for their paypal ID and make the payment direct yourself.  Most of the selling sites I use require paypal, but it is usual for the seller to just send their paypal ID (an email address) so that buyer can set the payment up themselves. I have occasionally been asked to send a paypal invoice, but for that I always take the buyers email so that it all shows properly though paypal and the buyer needs to log in to their account safely, not via my link, to pay.

You have been able to send paypal invoices from messenger for quite a while now (I've been doing it for 3yrs+)

Saves sharing or making mistakes with email addresses etc.

I've only ever sent them so would not know what.
a received one looks like but I would expect it to show in your PayPal account as a pending invoice so try logging directly into PayPal and checking it there.

How does it know what paypal account to send the invoice to though?

I bought something at the weekend from a private site via facebook, I obviously messaged the seller back and forth via messenger - but my facebook account doesn't use the same email as either of my paypal accounts - so there is no way the seller could send my invoice direct to my paypal? I sent the seller my paypal ID and they sent me an invoice which did show safely in my account when I logged in.

    Don't know?
You can send paypal invoices to a phone number so maybe it uses that?

If you send a invoice to an email address that is not associated with a PayPal account the email gives you an option to add that email address to an existing account as well.

Although,  if you read all the t&c's when you install the messenger app you have to give it permission for pretty much everything.  I wouldn't be surprised if it just reads the PayPal app on your phone and takes the data from that.

I've probably sent 30+ invoices this way and never had a buyer say they have not received it.
Well, I've had a few that have not paid the invoice but then they have also ignored any further messages so I've just presumed they have changed minds about buying the item..m
