Rematch credit ltd

Hello,

Not sure if I am posting in the right place.
I have had a few emails from rematch credit ltd saying I owe around £800. I don't have any debt (other than mortgage) so assumed these to be spam. The emails only include my first name and the account owed. I asked my husband to look into it for a second opinion and he said the site appears legit. I don't owe any money, I don't even have a credit card in my name. I checked Experian and my credit score is 850 and it says "Our records do not show any active credit accounts for you."

The latest email says if I don't pay by 10th July they will take legal action. Any suggestions? I don't want to respond to a scam but unsure what to do.

It may very well be a fishing exercise.  (as opposed to phishing...)

You could write to them by snail mail assuming they have given an address.  I wouldn't respond by email or phone because that just makes it easier for them to harass you.  If you do want to write to them send them a "prove it" letter in which you will be asking where the debt originated, why they have the right to be paid (as opposed to the original creditor) and for them to provide the credit agreement.  It's unlikely they will bother to reply or if they do without all the required info.  Even if they did have a legitimate debt the chances are that it is statute barred (over 6 years) which may be why you don't remember/know about it.

Of course it could be that it's something that has been sold to them at an awkward time - there's been some reports of debts being sold by a company a month before the person finished paying the loan and the info has never been updated.  And it's possible that it's been passed from a legitimate creditor (bank overdraft etc) to one collection company after another.  And also possible that somewhere they've got the info wrong so that while you are "pinthetail" they actually should be chasing "pinthetale" instead.  Companies will spread their net as far as they can at minimal/zero cost (hence using email) on the off chance that someone will be caught and pay.

If they actually want to get you to pay something they should be sending you a letter, not a random and uninformative email.

Thank you for replying, I am pretty sure I don't have any outstanding debts, I have always avoided debt, I can't even remember the last time I borrowed money other than my mortgage. If this debt was real wouldn't it have caused a problem with mortgage applications in the past?

If I write to them wouldn't I be giving them more details? I would have to include my home address which they don't appear to have right now.

Did you move house in the last 6 years and if so, maybe not update your car's address with the DVLA in a timely fashion? It could be a parking ticket + debt stuff

A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

"Will" take legal action, or "may" take legal action?

Emails can be ignored, unless they send a letter before action, in the post to be legally compliant with civil procedure rules, ignore them.

Emails and text messages can be ignored.  Respond only if they write to you and then only in writing.

If it's not showing on your credit reports then even if it is a " real" debt, it should be statute barred as over six years and they would be unable to enforce legal proceedings to collect it.

You state you have checked Experian but it may be wise to use free services to check Equifax and TransUnion to see if there is any evidence of this, on those?

It's probably a miss-match as they have been scouring their database, it happens all of the time and it frightens people to just pay even when it's not their debt.

They can continue to send you communications about it but you can safely ignore them.

Just having your first name and an email address, screams a junk debt buyer.

Personally, I would just block the email address that is was sent from and ignore it.  I would only act if I receive something through the post.

Not precisely accurate, they can still take you to court for a statute barred debt, and if you don`t defend the action, you can end up with a CCJ by default, but they must write to you with an LBA first, and only then can they issue preceding's if that is ignored or not responded too.

So if they write to you, you must deal with it, if they only send emails, you can ignore them.
