New house - bills

When you sign up for energy - you may be given a higher initial target based on typical usage for property size.
Some will even insist you pay monthly as you go even if set a nominal annual monthly target for first n months.
You can request monthly variable direct debit with many suppliers - so only pay for actual usage - monthly in arrears (but that will mean large bills winter, small bills summer, as use more for heating).
The previous occupants supplier for gas and/ or electric will become your deemed supplier(s) on day 1.
Contact the relevant company or companies and set up an account.
You have to register with them - before can move - but if thinking of moving supplier - only go onto their standard variable price not any fix they offer - as some come with exit fees.
Take meter readings with photos and keep them (inc electric, gas and water in your case) as soon as you become legally responsible - not always day you move in (e.g. if having work done).
Give those readings to companies as your billing start point.
PS - As a single person the water meter might save you £100s a year compared to nominal unmetered rates for a 4 bed.
Without a meter you could have been subsidising the likes of that family of 6, or those smaller occupancy - but who run their garden sprinklers for hours on end.
And to control heating costs - assuming wet gch - think about using trvs and closing doors for unused rooms - set to 2 or so depending on model will heat to c15C - enough to keep damp at bay - only heating used spaces to most peoples 18C for comfort in used spaces.

The 28 days thing doesn't exist. You can switch on the same day and the performance standards say that it should be completed in 5 working days.WBCPB said:
