Milk going off?

I'm surprised that mlk from the major supermarkets often has a 10+ day life. I find the bb date pretty accurate.
I do like the price of the 99p Farm Foods milk but it never has a long date on it0 -
I am really weird about milk, even the slightest hint it might be turning and out it goes. Yes, I sniff and even pour a little into the sink to check no little bits in it. Milk for me lasts past the use by date with no problems

I'm in line with the majority on here. I buy milk in Tesco and often use it past the use by date.0

We did have an issue with milk for a while last summer. It was odd as it seemed far worse (shorter lasting) when we purchased milk from the local branch of one shop brand than either the superstore of the same brand or the local branch of the alternative brands in our High Street. Made no sense at all.
Until, that is, one day I happened to be walking down the side street that passes the back of the store where the "early expiring" milk was from. Noted big crates of the milk inside the mesh fence store boundary with the sun beating down. Half a day with the milk like that could very easily be the reason that milk went off a day or two before the expiry.
Problem is now solved - we buy our milk from any store but that one.
Not a brand issue, but a local store management (or failure to manage) issue.2 -
We were having problems with milk despite having our fridge set to quite a cold temperature. But we were lucky having 2 fridges and the one in the garage was significantly colder than the one in the kitchen. Eventually we noticed that it didn't close well and the seal was failing so the door wasn't always really closed. Cue the chunky milk.
That and a few other issues in the kitchen (doors falling off cupboards etc) and we decided to get a new kitchen including a new fridge - which is marvellous and there's stuff in there well beyond it's BBD and still just fine.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe and Old Style Money Saving boards. No problems at all. However, I only buy fully skimmed U.H.T. milk. After opening the carton, it doesn't "go off" in the refrigerator even after about 5 days.I must confess though, whole fresh milk is far more palatable!0

I found the same issue with cream. If I bought cream in my closest sainsburys, I found it would have gone off in a couple of days and well within the expiry date. However, if I bought it in marks and Spencer, it lasted up to the expiry date. I therefore presumed that there may have been an issue in how sainsburys (for my local store at least) were storing the cream before it made it’s way to the shelf in the store.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -
Tryinghardtosave said:I have to agree with the OP - I also think something has changed with the milk as mine also is not so good a few days before the date..... I too haven't changed anything - fyi - I tend to shop at Tesco. There was a spate of comments like this a while back -- both from "Miffed Morrisons Shoppers" and "Outraged Aldi Adherents". In both cases, people threatened to take their milk purchasing elsewhere. Both were resellers of Arla milk ...It was around the time of the change from labelling Use By to Best Before, but I'm sure that's complete co-incidence. Just that the timing of this made it stick in my head.I found that milk was NOT keeping as well as it should. It wasn't the fridge (there is a separate thermometer showing actual temp. for fridge) and my usage and handling had not changed. I swapped from Morrisons to Aldi, just in case, and it still happened. Hmmm. The milk was definitely "turning" within 1 week of purchase, tasting a little different and making "gritty" tea as the milk separated into granules. It hasn't happened in a while though, so whatever it was worked its way out of the system. Hopefully it's not back!1
