It would be best if support timbers are not in direct contact with concrete garage floor as that would shorten their lifespan.
The garage has a carpet-type cover so the support timbers would be resting on them. But still curious how/why concrete garage floor would shorten timber life?
Garage floors can be a bit damp. Even when they have a DPM, penetrating damp through single skin brickwork can soak into the floor.
Probably not a serious issue, but might be worth sticking a piece of DPC under.

  • Ah I see. Good to know, thank you both!

On certain contracts I worked on I used to use a sledgehammer to drive in earthrods, when not on that type of work the hammer used to live in a corner of the garage with head on floor. After about five years got it out again and was surprised how the timber around head had deteriorated.

After that the new hammer sat on a wooden batten to protect it, I believe there can be a reaction between concrete and wood, indeed in the description of the timber referenced it says to avoid contact with ground.
