    Thanks for all your comments and suggestions. I found an alternative heating engineer - took him 20 mins to identify a permanent live and a switch live in the wrong places. Hey presto, I’m no longer thinking I’m mad and I have a system that now works. 👍

    Swap that nasty choc block box with a half decent CH wiring centre, makes it a lot easier to fault find.

    Oh, and it's unlikely they will send a heating engineer just a technician if you're lucky.
