Who has responsibility for smart meter installation?

I thought having the smart meter already in place was a prerequisite for a smart meter tariff? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Do you want the smart meter, or would it bring you benefits? If so, get in touch to get an appointment.Kernowc said:I have just moved to a smart meter tariff.
Can anyone please let me know, is it up to me to contact my supplier to arrange the installation, or the suppliers responsibility to contact me to arrange it?
If you don't mind either way and it doesn't stop you saving money, leave it to them.

How could you move to smart meter tariff without smart meter? Unless you me the E7 or E10 night tariffs? Not sure what you are really asking for?0

I do not have a smart meter at present, by changing to a smart meter tariff I have agreed to have one installed, but should the company contact me to arrange this, or should I contact them. A simple enough question!1

Hi, there are some smart meter tariffs which can only work once you've got a smart meter installed because they rely on the energy provider getting the data from the smart meter. Examples would be some of the EV tariffs. There are also tariffs which will work with a bog standard meter and the reason they're sold with the condition of having a smart meter installed is to give the energy company an extra lever to pull if you're a smart meter refusenik, i.e. if you resist having a smart meter you'll lose the benefits of the tariff.
If you've signed up to a pukka smart meter tariff that actually needs a smart meter to work then it's in your interests to call your supplier and chase them up because you won't get the benefits of the tariff until it's installed.
If you've signed up to a regular tariff then it's up to you what to do. If you're keen to get a smart meter in then call them to chase them up, or you can just wait for them to contact you.

A simple question and your circumstances are not out of the ordinary but you did not make them explicit in your original question and some of those who responded could not guess them.Kernowc said:I do not have a smart meter at present, by changing to a smart meter tariff I have agreed to have one installed, but should the company contact me to arrange this, or should I contact them. You can wait until the company contacts you but things might proceed more quickly if you contact them.Reed2 -
When I decided on a fixed tariff with Eon it was subject to agreeing to have a "smart" meter installed, gas and electricity.I did phone and e-mail for them to confirm that if it wasn't possible/practicle to fit one or both meters or poor area for them to communicate over the mobile phone network, would I still be eligible for that (smart meter) tariff. There was no requirement to contact them to arrange an appointment for installation. They e-mailed me to advise the date and time for that, obviously if inconvenient contact them to arrange a mutually agreeable date and time.0
