Fridge Freezer Stopped Working

Hi,
2-days I noticed that my Hotpoint Fridge Freezer had stopped cooling (both fridge and freezer), though all lights and electrics were still on. I read online it could be the fan iced up, so I emptied and unplugged for 24 hours with the doors open, to defrost. That didn't work.
When I plug the appliance in and turn it on, I get 5 seconds of whirring sounds as though the fan is trying to kick in, and then it goes silent. This happens every few minutes whilst plugged in. Is there anything I could look at/try before I purchase a new one, and dispose of this one?
Thank you.

How old is the Fridge/freezer ?0

I actually have no idea, I inherited it from the previous house owners and it looked in pretty new condition. Having said that it could well be years old.0

Get in touch with Hotpoint you may be able to start a plan where you pay monthly and they repair it and any other problems, minimum subscription is a year then cancel. This wil probably be cheaper than just having it repaired.1

Mnoee said:I had a hotpoint fridge freezer that stopped working in a similar manner. There was a while tray at the back that was full of water - emptying it seemed to make it work again! There was a screw, and it was also stuck in place with some sort of double sided tape. Unscrewed the screw, used brute force, then rescrewed with no extra tape. It happily worked for another two years or so until it was replaced. The light on the front never worked after that, however.
Apologies for not knowing any technical words or much detail - it was a while back and I was in a blind panic trying to save slowly defrosting food during a lockdown, I don't even remember where I read about trying that. But if you also have a white tray that's full of water visible at the back, it's worth a shot.
Edited to add: drip tray from the compressor, according to Google. No idea why mine became full instead of evaporating, but it didn't happen again.
Hi,
Thanks for this, worth a shot! I'm going to look up where this tray is from the compressor on this fridge freezer, and see if I can access. Will let you know if it works. Anything to save me having to fork out a few hundred pounds for a new machine.0
