Hacked account

Options
My Ebay account was hacked, over 2 years ago. Apparently someone sold goods received payments, but never sent the goods. This only occurred a few times over a very limited period. I am now being chased by a debt recovery agency for the money. I've had an account with them for maybe 20 years  I have never sold on Ebay & am very angry with them. They have stopped my account so am unable to access it. What is the best course of action?

Have you reported it to eBay or Action Fraud - who is chasing you? Is it eBay themselves or the people who bought goods that they never received?

What did you do 2 years ago when you found out?

I believe the hackers used my account to advertise the fictitious goods & sell them. I told ebay 2 years ago they were not my transactions, & thought nothing more of it until they started chasing me recently.

It's so long ago I can't remember what happened when I originally found out about what had happened. I know I had some contact with Ebay, & I thought it was sorted. I'm being harassed by a Debt Recovery Agency called Moorcroft. The amount is a few hundred UK pounds.

I rang Ebay maybe 3 months ago, explained my position, they seemed to accept what I was saying & said they would look into it. I've heard directly from them since.

Do Moorcroft have a court judgment against you? If not, you can tell them to whistle.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

A lot of debt collecting firms send out a few letters, which doesn't cost a lot.  Some people pay, and apparently enough do to make the process worthwhile.

The question is what happens if you don't pay? Probably, nothing at all. It may be on your credit record - it's possibly worth checking.

It's just possible that they'll issue proceedings, in which case enter a defence along the lines you have indicated above.

I have yet to see any confirmed cases where ebay debt collectors have gone as far as court. They tend to harass for a year or thereabouts and then give up. It might be worth the OP checking on the debt board about the powers that these companies have, and more importantly don't have.

The issue with not trying to resolve this is that any attempt at using ebay in the future, or any accounts from people that ebay strongly suspect are linked risk having funds held to cover this debt.

If this is a case where ebay might not have acted to deal with a hacker once this was formally notified, it might be worth trying to contact ebay again and resolving this.
