"Excluding bank holidays" meaning?

Hi, this might seem like a daft question.

I've recently accepted a job offer and regarding AL entitlement it says:
"(x) days of annual leave (excluding public holidays)"

Would you say this means I'd have to work public holidays? Or the total number isn't inclusive of the public holidays I'd have off?

    What actual number is "(x)"
How many days would you work in a normal week?

Is this a business which normally opens on a bank holiday?
What sort of business and what role would you have in it?

The number is 29, it's full time 5 days pw. Not sure if they stay open on bank holidays but yeah I'm just finding the wording a bit confusing

That would normally mean that you get public holidays on top of the fixed number. But it is better to ask them because we can't be sure that is what they meant when they wrote it!

It means you have x number of  normal working days as annual leave

As well as 8*7.5 hours  for public holidays  ( as the minimum required by law is four normal working weeks of  annual holiday and 8 *7.5 for Bank hoildays )

Without knowing what the  normal working patterns of the  setting are  it'll be nigh on impossible ot know whether you have to work Bank hoildays or not

likely  37 days in total assuming the normal working day is 7.5 hours , but   do check with the employer

its an odd choice of phrasing. you'd normally expect
x days leave plus bank holidays (possibly saying how many BH days there are) or
    x days leave including BHs

using "excluding BHs" has just confused the issue.

Because of the ambiguity in the wording I would definitely check what they actually mean.  As others have said, normal wording is 'x' days plus bank holidays.  Depending on the actual job, 29 plus 8 bank holidays is on the generous side.  I only worked at one place where I matched or bettered that and I was a fairly senior manager in that job.

You have assumed that a normal working day is 7.5 hours long.  That may not be the case for the OP.

But, as others have said, given the apparent generosity of the holiday entitlement, whether they mean the OP cannot take any bank holidays or that they actually meant "including" needs to be clarified with the employer.

even when 'normal working days' are longer  Bank hoildays are 7.5 hours ...  otherwise  the  significant number of  very heavily unionised workplaces where  bank holidays are quoted in 7.5 hour 'days' while the   other leave is quoted o nthe basis of  the 9/10/ 12  hour  working day  would be getting  extra bank holiday  hours / days for their members

Unions and employers can agree whatever they want but the law does not stipulate anything about hours or even days.  The law refers to weeks and this is now 5.6 weeks.

Bank holidays have no special significance in employment law and, for that purpose, have no length attributed to them.

The minimum entitlement being 5.6 weeks, employers must allow that for their employees.  If bank holidays are in addition to that, they can be calculated and paid at whatever rate is agreed between the parties.
