Paying off childs student loan

My husband and i would like to pay off the balance of our sons student loan. Are there inheritance tax implications on this?

As an investment its a rather poor one given that the interest rate matches inflation and its written off at a certain age.

As for the original question, gifts (for whatever purpose) have no negative impact on IHT. If neither of you used your annual exemptions last financial year the first £12k will drop out of your estates with emmediate effect anything over that will be subject to the 7 year rule.
