Laptop coming apart - fix or replace?

Probably time to recognise that you have had a good life out of it but now need a new one.PS. Both my current laptops are well older than that (10 yrs and 13 yrs) and still going strong on Win10 - and I've had Win 11 on the older one but didn't like it so went back to 10.It can be true that paying a bit more is worth it in the long run.And it's better for the planet than throwing tech away every couple of years, but if it's broke then it's broke.1

Fully agree with your thinking. My last computer died slowly after 5 years. I had current laptop as a backup. So due to slow death, I had time to move stuff over. This time no backup machine (but I backed up the data) and I stopped using this computer in an instant. My one concern is that I use one application that uses java and I don’t know how the latest Windows deals with that. Suck it and see I suppose.Newcad said:Probably time to recognise that you have had a good life out of it but now need a new one.PS. Old PC's I used to turn into chrome os gave them a new life lot's of old vista laptops that were really good were well worth keeping to upgrade to chrome. I believe people are still using vista which was good but buggy.0

As an update, I took the laptop to a computer repair shop to get the old hard drive removed which was done and I was given a connector to connect it to my new laptop. The repair guy said the reason the case was coming apart was the hinge was broken and it is a common fault, I am guessing in HP laptops. He showed me there was no problem with the battery. One solution might be to glue the bits back together but he didn't think it would hold. But I am glad I bought the new laptop and am very happy with it. I connected the old drive to the new laptop and all the data is accessible.2
