Easyjet Shocker

last week two hours after advertised take off time, all about to board and EJ cancelled the flight (to Germany from UK).
This was pretty annoying, I was able to get home but my hotel in Hamburg and next days train ticket could not be cancelled. My German friends said that I am due 250 eur due to this as they an EU operator.
I have already accepted the original flight cost back from EJ (I booked a more expensive on ethe next day, not with EJ who i will never use again.) Not sure I should have done that but did. can i also claim back new flight cost.

Hamburg Airport has a very strict night curfew that starts at 23:00.0

By chance was this either EZY8635 on 20 June or EZY 6545 on 21June?
Did they tell you the reason for the delay, then cancellation?0 -

There was poor weather conditions over much of Northern Europe on 20th with widespread thunderstorm and cumulonimbus cloud activity impacting flying. Many EuroControl areas placed air traffic restrictions on flights and implemented flow restrictions. The German Donau sector had up to 60 min flow delays following aircraft earlier reporting heavy turbulence. The poor weather conditions heavily impacted flying over many parts of France, northern Spain, Switzerland/Alps, Luxembourg, Austria and Germany particularly later in the afternoon. Strong wind gusts, thunderstorms, hail - all not great flying conditions and why ATC delays crept up, often at short notice.
I suspect the above played a part in your creeping delay, then the cancellation. That together with the limitations of flying into Hamburg airport late at night.
Easyjet should have provided welfare, or if they did not you should with receipts be able to claim costs for light refreshments. You had the right to a refund which it seems you took. Given the likely reasons for the delays (to many flights that day, not just EasyJet and not just at Gatwick) I don’t believe compensation will be payable.
[The 21st was even worse with Gatwick delays and cancellations. That was the day of ATC staff shortages at LGW].2 -
If as @Westin says the delays were outside of the airline's control then I'd agree compensation won't be payable. When did easyJet offer to re-route you? If they didn't offer an appropriate re-routing then you may be able to claim the cost of your alternative flight (although having accepted the original cost as a refund you'd now claim the difference in cost between the original and replacement flight).
Lost hotels/trains would be a travel insurance claim, airline are not liable.
