Royal Mail Stamp Replacement

I just received my replacement barcoded stamps from Royal Mail. They replaced the 2nd class stamps sent with new ones, however, they did not replace the 1st class stamps sent due to "24 were either stamps which have already been used or were not genuine Royal Mail stamps"
The stamps I returned were all still in their purchased folders so not used, and were all purchased from (presumably?) sanctioned Royal Mail outlets i.e. sub post office, WH Smith etc, so if they were fake, then it should go back as Royal Mails problem to rectify. Just wanted to get a feel if there are any other similar stories out there, and if so, in what numbers.
