18866 good for business?

Thanksa million for all your helpful replies yesterday.

Great to hear that you can use 18866 for businesses but...i read somewhere on another site today that there can be problems with quality and sometime access. Is this true or is the competition scaremongering? - i wanted to use 18866 via a switchboard to about 40 people?

If so, what is the next cheapest call provider to try. (i was thinking of setting something up as a back up - if we got a deal on somthing else eg. off peak free calls, cheaper ngn's, good mobile calling rates etc etc to make it worth any monthly fee)
I spoke to 'talk talk' to get their business rates and they said they will discuss costs personally with a company in oder to compete with the best rates they've been offered. If every one says this how do i get a good deal in the first place?
Waddle you do eh?

As it is not going to cost you anything to try, other than connection charge why not register and see - you can always de-register

Let 2 or 3 in your business see how it works, and if there are problems you will soon know, if it goes well then increase the people using it.

The business where I work has been using this for about 5 months now.  Very very occasionally there is a bad line or echo, It's not difficult to just hand up and try again after all it's only the outgoing calls that are through 18866 .  All incoming ones are through BT.  As the switchboard is already set up to route through another provider (not BT) a speeddial button was set up to dial the override number plus 18866.  That way only one button needs to be dialed before the actual area code and phone number.
  • I've used 18866 for a few years.
I'm on the forum to check if others have also noticed a quality drop.
    - I now get more and more calls where the person I called is strugling to hear me !
So I'm going to change from them.
    Not sure who to yet.

I think I would have started a new thread rather than re-opening a 5-year old one in this case but I have also noticed a deteriroration in recent weeks (I use the sister company 18185).

I used 18185's online webmail to complain and received the usual, "Temporary glitch" reply so would urge anyone else experiencing this problem to do the same - repeatedly if necessary.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
