Smart Meter Issues

When I moved into the property I had some possible trouble with the smart meter. I was told to send them the readings from gas and electric which I did then they said it was fine but heard nothing on what the potential issue was. This was with Shell.

A month ago I got a new bill through which seemed to flip some of my readings and basically came out saying I owed over £800. Disputed it and Octopus confirmed it was an error and reverted bill back to normal. They said it was caused by an issue from Shell with the Smart Meter.

My question is, if there is an issue, what happens if this is found later down the line? I'm aware of the one year back billing but would a smart meter fault negate that at all do we know?

There seem to be a lot of problems with smart meters not being smart at the moment, across multiple suppliers.

Unless you are confident that the supplier is receiving readings from your smart meter correctly (and you should be able to check online if they are) then personally I'd be sending them regular meter readings yourself to ensure that any issues are ideintified quickly (I do ours monthly).

A common problem moving from Shell to Octopus is the day and night rates being switched - does that apply here?  If not, has your electricity meter ever recorded usage on more than one register?

Can you provide manual reading even if you have a smart meter?

I am thinking to move to smart meter but it stops me after reading the reviews.

Yes. Worst case it might take one or two button presses to get the reading displayed.

I think this was what happened to me, just more concerned with the chance that Shell might have had it wrong before the transfer to Octopus if that makes sense?

I'll take the advice from you guys on submitting/recording my own readings too, just in case.
