If they won't get additional practice have 2 lessons a week.

If someone needs 40 hours I would be more likely to question their ability.  The important thing is road time and most parents should be able to do that.

That's a bummer, so starting from scratch Sid is probably right then.  Once he is getting to grips with the basics I think 2 hour lessons are a good idea.  Just practice, practice, practice.
