We looked at air conditioning but we don't have enough space between window and ceiling in any room. When I lived in Canada we had air conditioning units in the actual windows, but I haven't seen those here.
Do you have a loft/attic space?
Ceiling mounted cassettes are available, also.

Or floor mounted https://www.orionairsales.co.uk/mitsubishi-heavy-industries-srf-floor-hyper-inverter-air-conditioning-a-198-c.asp
Or even slim ceiling units... https://www.orionairsales.co.uk/mitsubishi-heavy-industries-fde-ceiling-air-conditioning-heat-pump-inverters-a-32-c.asp
Consult a few professional installers if intrested.
Mobile aircon, like all in one wall mounts or the 'in window' units you saw are very, very, noisy. Proper split packs on tickover once the room temperature is lowered are quieter than many cooling fans.

We did a fundraising for fans to put by each patient’s bed, and the infection control officer scrapped the lot.1

Family member who works in NHS says they aren't allowed to have fans in their office because (a) infection control (they have been wearing masks again for some weeks) and (b) trailing wires presenting a trip hazard. All electrical equipment has to undergo Portable Appliance Testing, so if staff bring in own fans, kettles and toasters, Estates department confiscates them. Family member worked in a London hospital which had two fires, caused by a toaster on a ward, and an iron left on, in a nurse's room.

I dont do alot really. Just leave the windows open, esp upstairs to create air flow and let heat escape. Then I move to the shady part of the house when it gets too hot! (luckily my bedroom is downstairs and doesnt get sun after 12 so it stays pretty cool).
I dont think it has been massively hot so far though.1 -
It seems to have cooled down a bit and we're now forecast to have a wet (and cold?!) July. Just when I was really starting to enjoy the summer after what feels like a very long winter. No man is worth crawling on this earth.

Here in Southern California, we are just starting the summer weather. Supposed to be over 32C by the end of the week here - and I am in the cooler part. Where my sister lives, they expect it to get over 42C by the end of the week. Our summer will usually last until the first part of October, so a lot of hot days are coming. We don't have air-conditioning here, but my two sisters do. One has offered to let me come and work at her house (only 2 miles from here), but that would mean leaving the roommates and the three cats to fend for themselves. Don't really trust the roommates to watch out for the cats. A lot of lemonade and iced tea in my plans for the summer.5

I do a lot of the things already mentioned here so won't repeat them but something else that I do when it's really hot is to thoroughly wet spare face flannels with cold water and then pop them in a plastic box in the fridge, when you feel really broiling take one out and drape it over your face while you lie down for 20 minutes. Another thing I've done is to have a lukewarm shower more than once a day and wash my hair at the same time, I feel wonderfully cool afterwards.
Other things I do are to wear natural fibres and loose clothing and plan your day so that you're least active during the hottest hours, if possible have a siesta during the really hot time although I know not everyone can do that.
Cold food is lovely too, try cucumber, pea and mint or yoghurt soup or gazpacho and chill the bowls and add ice cubes to it when you dish up and eat at the cooler times of day and keep fruit in the fridge so that you can use that as a cooling snack.3 -
I have gazpacho as part of my breakfast year round but without the ice !1

How hot are peoples houses getting? The highest I have seen the thermostat in my lounge is 25.2 which has felt warm, but not hot enough to have to do any special cooling measures.
@weenancyinAmerica I hate to imagine the temperature in your house without air conditioning!2
