Control Account Fed ex possible phishing scam

I received an email yesterday from a company called Control Account which read:

'Receipt for payment'

Thank you for your payment of £141.98 to Controlaccount against account number ******* with reference to FedEx Express UK Limited on 23/06/2024 at 14:10.
The authorisation code for this payment was "******".

Kind regards

Email address: noreply@controlaccount.com

After doing some research on the company, it seems they are legitimate.

I dont recognise the account number they provided and it was only 7 numbers long as opposed to the usual 8.

I have checked my accounts and no payments have been taken by this company (so far). I've not ordered anything from overseas recently and always try to use reputable UK companies when I do order things and very rarely order from ebay.

I'm presuming this is some form of phishing scam? I dont know whether I should be concerned or not, at the very least because they have my email address.

Can anyone advise whether I should just ignore this for now or if there is someone I can contact to find out more? Has anyone received anything similar?

Thanks in advance.

Whilst It could be a phishing attempt, it seems unlikely.  Scammers will try to lure you into clicking a link or replying to a false email address - which doesn't seem to be the case here (quite the opposite given it's a "no replay" email address!).  I can't see what any scammer could possibly hope to gain from sending you this email.

It's more likely that they've got the wrong email address.

You could either ignore it (as it's not your problem), or give them a call (use contact info you pull from their website, NOT from the email) and let them know - but you're in no way obligated to do this.

The account number would be their account not your bank account... on the basis of it talks about an authorisation code it's presumably a card payment they've received.

Sounds more like a typing error and somehow your email has gotten associated with someone else's account.
