And equally people poo pooing VPNs without reason is also why people don't understand equally how valuable they can be. They certainly aren't required by many people, but they have general use in in obscurity, security, geo-location, avoiding traffic shaping etc.

Your comment about VPN providers tracking people shows a lack of knowledge. Pretty much all VPN providers create container environments upon substantiation, do not keep logs of IP sources or destinations and the container is destroyed when the session ends. There is not tracking for any worth its salt.

HTTPS provides pretty much zero obscurity of where you are browsing, it does provide it for what you are doing.

There are lots of reasons as to why someone may want a VPN, who are we to judge.

Used to be Express VPN and NordVPN were the two main choices. Express VPN has recently bee sold to a company with a background in malware.

Personally have been a NordVPN user for years and have many reasons for using one.

The destination website is still sent unencrypted in an https header.

I disagree that it’s only a privacy issue. Data can be combined to cause a security issue.  You could for example, find out who someone banks with and use that for a phishing or social engineering attack.
Again, there is no such thing as an https header. HTTPS is HTTP over an encrypted connection.- the encryption is in place before any such headers are sent. The fact that so few people understand the basics of this is why VPNs are so easy to mis-sell.

A TLS connection will reveal the destination IP and it may reveal an additional host name that isn't already available through dns. Do you seriously think this is why most people are paying for a VPN?

It’s only encrypted in transit not in storage. Additionally the domain, protocol and port are visible.

I did not say that this is why most people pay for a VPN.

I am merely giving an example of why the might be useful if that sort of thing bothers you (see my first post)
