You can get really good and very hard wearing imitation sisel/coir/seagrass rugs and carpets for outdoor use that you can wash and even bleach a bit if needed.
E.g.

Laying it over something flat like concrete would be ideal.

Great, but do also think about that wall behind the sofa. It looks like there are two different surfaces and you need something to draw the eye up and beyond the floor. A darker colour that doesn't show the unmatched surfaces as much could help.
As would any sort of feature at high level. You don't want pots, but could you plant a climber in the ground to the right of the patio and let it grow along the wall to soften it and add interest? If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

I can't put a climber on the wall sadly as there's a concrete apron all around the house, so no way to get it from the soil to the wall. I wish I could, it would look lovely

I have two big outdoor rugs over ugly paving and it’s looks great, is softer to walk on and has lasted well0

I have seen people on fb that have used plastic stencils and paint to create a tile pattern on to concrete.Think first of your goal, then make it happen!1

This sort of thing, although there are lots of other designs available.
