Is it possible to get someone outside the family to talk to him? Hospital social worker, hospice advisor, MacMillan nurse, local cleric if he's into that?

All of those have achieved what I thought was impossible with those with shortened lives. Reconciled the people surrounding them, got them to sort out messy personal affairs etc. Even one guy who couldn't face the imminent prognosis and blanked anyone who raised the subject eventually made a will, in case.

Also ask about social media and other passwords. He might like his kids to have photos and access to his playlists?
