Holiday Insurance Claim

Hi everyone

I’m after a bit of advice as I’ve never had to claim on holiday insurance before.

I was meant to be travelling this Saturday with my mother on a hotel & flight package with British Airways. Unfortunately my mother has been hospitalised today and is being kept in so we have had no choice but to postpone the holiday.

British Airways have charged an amendment fee of £800 to to move the holiday to a different date in September (plus the additional cost of the difference in the new holiday cost).

I have insurance through my Monzo Max account and my mother also has her own travel insurance.

As I am the lead booker, would it be myself who has to try to claim for the £800 or would my mother need to do it though her insurance?

Thanks in advance.

I suggest that you make a claim on your insurance: you will be asked if any other insurance might cover part of the loss, and so you give details of your mother's insurance. In an ideal world the insurers would cooperate behind the scenes to share the loss (particularly since your mother cannot make a claim at present).

Best wishes for her speedy recovery.

Another consideration is the reason for your mother being admitted to hospital.

If it is related to an ongoing investigation or previous condition that has not been declared then you may find that neither insurer will pay out.

Hope she recovers quickly and you can enjoy your holiday in September, but do check both policies, you will almost certainly have to declare the issue to them to ensure continuing cover.

You each claim for your proportion of it from each of your insurances.
  • Thanks all, I will wait now for her to leave hospital then take it from there. Nothing related to any pre existing conditions, it's come completely out of the blue.

personally I would have contacted the insurance company first.
They may have wished to cancel the holiday and reimburse you (if the condition if something ongoing they may not want to cover it in future).

I appreciate it happened at short notice.

    Just to give an update!

I submitted my claim through Monzo on Friday evening and I’ve had an update today to say that the claim has been approved for the full £1700.

I was only expecting them to pay out for the £800 amendment fee, but they’ve actually accepted a claim for the amendment fee + the difference in holiday cost.

Must say I’m pretty impressed at the whole process via Monzo - it was all managed via their app and I’ve not had to speak to a single person!
