Car insurance groups

I am looking to buy a car.
Is there anywhere I can find accurate insurance groups?
Every time I try to find out they seem to differ.
Keep on trucking!

For what purpose? They don't correlate to your policy price very well if that is what you were hoping. You could easily find a group 40 car cheaper than a group 30 as an example.

The groups and classifications are done by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) and Thatcham, but don't believe they publish the database directly to the public.

You will find various sites (Parkers, MoneySupermarket, Cuvva) all do lookups but may not all be using the ABI sources or be up to date.

The Car Groups are maintained by Thatcham Research, it certainly has been publicly available in the past but note that the link from MoreThan's website now goes to a page that just rates alarms/immobilisers rather than cars.

I wouldn't put too much weight on them however, they cover predominately cost to repair and security and dont consider things like "what sort of person buys this car" and that can have a massive influence. The three Motor insurers I've worked for (2 of them being the in the top 5 car insurers in the UK) dont use Thatchams for their rating.

A few years ago we were looking at buying a brand new car, either a luke warm hatchback which was a group 26 car or a blow the budget 4.7L 2 seater in group 50. For me to be the sole driver the Group 50 car (which was also over 3 times the value) the group 50 was about £200 cheaper to insure than the group 26, add my wife as a learner driver added under £50 to the group 50 car and about £300 to the group 26.
