Has anyone successfully found a way of setting up reliable alerts or notifications from Google calendar?  That is loud or persistent enough to be reliable?  All I get is a ping, which is OK if the phone is next to me.  However, if the phone's in a different room or if the TV or washing machine is on, chances are the alerts will be missed.

Yes, just change your notification for a ringtone.
You can do it for the whole phone or just for calendar notifications.

    So far I've found

    >Settings
    >Sound & Vibration
    >Default notification sound

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmazIFBQnIQ

The majority of these are just short single tone sounds.  Moto is probably the longest and an improvement, however
Ideally I'd like it to switch to one of the alarm sounds.  I don't think it give a ringtone option here.

Download the zedge app and choose whatever alarm or notification you want and then download it to your phone.
Then go to settings / apps / calendar / notifications / calendar notifications / sound and choose the sound you just downloaded.

I've been testing various alarm/notifications and encountered another problem.  Google Calendar isn't 100% reliable at setting off the notification on the phone at exactly the right time, or sometimes at all. Setting up multiple backup notifications within a minute of one another doesn't always get around this problem either.

Perhaps it's because the phone needs to communicate backwards and forwards to the Internet to get triggered, although in my case the router is quite near and should get a very strong signal. It's particularly unreliable getting through to the phone if I've entered the notification times on the PC, even if the page is closed afterwards.  If it's left open it often sends just one to the PC ignoring the phone altogether.

I suspect the only reliable alarm system is to get one internal to the phone itself, a simple job for my old dumb phone and easy to operate.

I think I've found out part of the problem to this.  The notifications don't work if the phone has been still for a long time, like several hours. This isn't the same as locking which is set to 5 seconds, yet the notifications will still come though after this providing the phone has been moved recently.  Neither is it anything to do with sleep mode as this problem occurs outside those hours.  It's like having an alarm clock which only works if you shake it.

'Notifications on lock screen' >  'show conversations' >  'default and notifications' is activated
'Show sensitive notifications when locked' is on

I've tried turning on and off  'allow notification snoozing' whichever setting is supposed to make it work all the time.

    'enhanced notifications' are on.

It's something which senses the phone being physically moved.  Then they all come though.

If your notifications are only coming through when the phone is awake then that suggests the issue may be being caused by battery optimisation, which seeks to curb notifications when the phone is not in use

This is talking about the Pixel but should should work for most OEM implementations of Android:
