Card charged despite not entering PIN when prompted

Hi all
I tried to use my CC contactless, it asked me to pop it in the machine and enter my PIN. I hadnt used it for a while and couldnt remember my PIN so used my debit card instead. The payment went through OK and all was fine until I saw that my CC HAD been charged some days later!!?? I called my CC company who told me it was the fault of the fender? Is that the case? Surely it was ultimately the CC provider for allowing the transaction to complete in the 1st place??
P.S. - I have contacted the vender who is investigating the matter however, I was wondering if my trust was misplaced in thinking that when prompted for a PIN, if it isnt entered....then my card would be safe!!??

How long ago since you made the transaction ? If only a few days, are you sure the CC payment has actually gone through and it is not just an initial authorisation attempt from the contactless action that will drop off in a few days ?

Check with the CC company that it's actually been collected and not just authorised/pending. It can be that something goes wrong between the merchant bank of the vendor and the card machine which means it gets a wrong response however the result of that is the collection is never made and so you just see an authorisation which will drop off in a 7-10 days automatically.0
