Car insurance question

My friend owns a car (V5 is in his name) He went abroad for a long time. I want to apply for car insurance policy for myself to drive that car (he allowed me and my partner to drive his car).

My question is: am I allowed to add my partner as a named driver to my policy  to drive a car of which I am not the owner or my partner will need to apply for her own car insurance policy?

As you are not the registered keeper of the car you may find it difficult to get insurance.

Is the car still insured by your friend?

The v5 is not proof of ownershio

the insurers will want to see that you have insurance interest in the car. Or not taking out a policy on a random car

has your friend ‘gifted’ it to you whilst they are gone?

or can you not be added to your friends policy

No he has not ‘gifted’ it to me. The car is also on finance (my friend took the finance)

Considering all these circumstances I believe that the only way for me to drive the car legally is if I am added as a named driver to my friends insurance policy

Adding you as a named driver is normally the simplest approach. If your friend is away long term, you may be considered the main driver and the insurance company will need to know that.

You'll pay a higher premium for neither you nor your finance company being the registered keeper and owner but plenty will insure it.

As there is mention of finance, you need to double check who the legal owner and registered keepers are before getting quotes. Many have gotten unstuck by making assumptions.
