Car insurance - recording a claim on named driver

I am trying to get insurance for my wife to drive her car, with me as a named driver.

Last year my wife had an accident driving my car, that was decided as her fault, but claimed through my insurance as she was the named driver.

Now she is insuring another car, with me as a named driver so I have recorded the accident against my wife but my question is -

  • Do I have to record that same accident against me as a named driver, because my policy on the other car had a claim?
I have done quotes against both just recording it on my wife's record, and also recording it on both my wife and my named driver record.  If I add the same accident to my record (because it was a claim on my policy) it increased the quotes by £100 or more.  Her current insurance policy dont seem to need me to record it, but I wanted to check what I should be doing?

Any ideas?

You haven't had an accident, so you don't need to record it against your name.

This is wrong, in my experience you also need to declare the accident in your name because it was your policy.

    My experience:

My child had an accident whilst a named driver on my partner's policy, when I next added my partner as a named driver on my policy i didn't declare the accident in her name because she hadn't been the driver. Some months later the insurer wanted another £300 (from £600 already paid) as they said my partner had an accident against her name, I said no, she wasn't the driver, they replied that it was still a claim under her policy. Can't remember now but i think in the end they didn't add the extra premium because i said the wording in the quote questions wasn't clear, but after that i declared it in future quotes.

You answer the questions on the form as they are worded.

You haven't had an accident, but you have made a claim.

So if the question is exactly "Have you had any accidents in the past 5 years?" (Which it won't be...) the answer is No.

Unless the insurer is foolish, the question will be more like "Have you had any accidents, made any claims or suffered any losses in connection with a motor vehicle in the last 5 years?"  and your answer has to be yes.
