Non fault car insurance rip off

Hi All,

This is my first thread so please forgive me if this has already been covered.

I recently had an incident in my car.  A neighbour crashed into my car, claimed responsibility and their insurance covered all damage.

I have just gone to renew my car insurance only for it to increase 30% because of this non fault claim on someone else's insurance.  I can just about accept this but then the following happened.  Because I have a joint policy with my wife, she also gets penalised.  I have not renewed the joint policy and have instead gone for separate policies.  However, even though the incident  was me in my car at the time, she now has to pay more for her policy.  Is it just me or is this not fair??

Can I fight this or do I just have to accept it?  This is going to be on both our policies for the next 5 years.  Crazy!!

Any advice or similar stories much appreciated.

Thanks

Dave

a lot of people, me included, have found renewal prices increasing by that much even without any incident/claim/accident.

  • This was on top of an already hiked price.

What is your evidence that the 30% increase is based solely due to the non-fault accident?

Ultimately, shop around, as long as you are otherwise a good risk then in most cases a single non-fault accident is unlikely to have a material impact on premiums. If you already have a string of claims to your name then yes it will have a much bigger impact as its showing the trend is continuing.

Mass market consumer insurance is priced on statistical analysis and that typically shows those that have had a non-fault accident are more likely to have another claim than someone who has had none. Whilst on this occasion your neighbour did the right thing and let you know, next time it may be a hit and run which by standard is a fault claim.
