Yes it's legal. There is guidance about visits here

The chances are that a Fieldcall agent will call if that has been suggested. I thought Oakbrook Finance was bluffing about a home visit but on cue an agent turned up at my house, rang the doorbell and left a letter. I'm not at home currently so I haven't seen the letter yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if they call again. I live in a rural area too, didn't think they would bother travelling to me, but they did!

The job of these "field agents" is simply to ascertain why you have not contacted your lender, or the collection company,  whichever it may be, to discuss repayment.

They might act in an authoritative way, but are just simple employees doing a job, no more statutory power than anyone else, certainly nothing to fear, or get het up about, its just a letter.

You don`t have to speak to them, most peoples contact with them will only consist of the letter through the door, and that`s it.

As with everything debt collector`s do, the threat of a home visit is designed to panic you into picking up the phone and calling them, as is the receipt of a calling card/letter, its all phycological warfare type stuff, and tactics haven`t really changed since the 80`s, the wording in the letters has been toned down to suit the current woke trend so prevalent in todays society, its all a bit of a shadow of its former self really.

Back in the day the letters would threaten removal of your "cooker and fridge" if you didn`t pay up, or that they`d "see you in court next week" if payment wasn`t received in full today, all complete and utter rubbish of course.

I remember one local debt collector who used to deliver postcards with threats in red ink. For added effect he had changed his address to The Bailiff's Office.

I used to enjoy complaining about him.
