Garage done work without authorisation to the tune of £5320

Hello all fellow fighters of avoiding being ripped off

Never used this garage it was first time as it was an engine rebuild. Audi A5 cabriolet,

Based in Scotland.

Garage done work which wasn’t authorised they quoted £6000 (engine rebuild) then dropped it to £5320 after I said that’s a lot of money. I asked what other options do we have ie reconditioned or working second hand engine and also asked what payment options do I have ie instalments (I stated I knew there would be no guarantees they could offer with an engine I provided. The working engine was only £800 and I got a quote from another garage for fitting a new timing chain kit, new fluids/filters and basically making sure it was tip top before installing it £1400) which I sent a video of and asked what I owe up until then for removing engine and diagnosing as I still had to get tyres and brake discs and pads done and the work was becoming beyond economical repair (could have got a replacement car that price but the garage knew it has sentimental value) and I was starting to think realistically. I got no response then they said they wouldn’t fit a second hand engine as no guarantees and proceeded to do the work without authorisation and said the car was actually finished and ready for collection and said I owe them £4395 plus the vat which was £5274. I Paid with Mastercard credit card under protest as it’s the only way they would release the car but didn’t get to write it on invoice as they only issued me my copy and it was getting quite an awkward and heated situation. What should I do? My credit card bill will be on the way with a Ballance of £5274 which I don’t have so interest is going to mount up heavily. I have all emails which will verify all what I have said here in this message and probably more.

So to put it straight I could have got a replacement engine fully fitted with new timing chain fitted and new fluids as-well as it fully serviced for £2200 but had to pay £5275 because this garage carried out work without authorisation. Anyone got any thoughts on how I should proceed with this.

Thanks in advance

Do you have legal expense cover as part of your home insurnance? If so, call the Legal Helpline provided by your insurer. If you don't have this cover, you need professional legal advice. Ask to meet with a solicitor for a free initial consultation.

You should probably arrange a personal loan for the amount you will have to pay off your credit card bill in order to avoid the excessive interest charges. If you are able to successfully sue the garage, your claim should include the interest you have to pay to the credit card company and loan company. (You are under a duty to minimse your losses).

I suspect that if this does go to court, a judge might order you to pay half the difference between £2200 and £5274 because you have had a rebuilt engine from the garage. So the garage will be ordered to pay you about £1000 back + some interest.

The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

The garage “done” work costing £5320. Then you asked what other options do we have.

isnt it a bit late for that, or maybe they hadn’t the done the work at that point. Did you read your thread back before you posted it ?
