Renewal quotes

So insurance is up for renewal I’ve always been lazy and just let it renew with current insurer (I know terrible) insurances ends 20th of July lowest I’ve got it is for £390 currently paying £589 a year so hopefully being a bit more proactive to try and save some money

but random question why is it if I go to insure it for the 21st a day later it jumps up to £1,100 a year
£2820/£4000 0% 24 months pay £150 HSBC
£2,100/£3000 0% 27 months pay £150 M&S

£2,200/£7250 0% 14 months pay £60  RBS
£990/£2000 28% Zable closed  £60

    July not June?

Where are you looking at for prices?
If its an aggregator like confused.com is the higher price also the same insurer or a different insurer?

Assuming it is July you are very early for looking and the 1 extra day could result in more companies saying it's too far away and so not quoting.

Yeah July was just getting a feel for prices to be fair
rather leaving it last min and letting it carry on with current insurance and yes was on a comparison site and I’m currently with hasting been with them for the last 4 years and has increased every year so expecting the same in a few weeks when they send me my renewal.
wife is always with them but her isn’t up until December.

New quote was with Halifax and gave me the option to pick a date upto 60 days for a quote so was just playing around with date was just surprised to see it increase by £1.000 for taking it out a day later.

so when should I be actively looking?
    Thanks for the reply

According to this site its 20-26 days in advance https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/car-insurance/when-to-renew/

I've no idea if their analysis has been updated to reflect the change in laws last year where new customer discounting was outlawed for Motor and Home but their chart is the same.

Based on my gut, rather than analysis, its about the right sort of range given many insurers won't quote more than 28 days in advance and historically there were loadings for those quoting last minute on the principle its even more of a distress purchase and less time to shop around.

so last years was £540 this year £985 nothing change no points and claims got a few quotes come through now and there mostly around the £350-£400 mark.

I’m currently with Hastings and there’s has come back at £410 on a comparison site with all details the same information they have used for them
sending me out my renewal quote at £985 so why is it so different?
    Thanks
