Scottish Power had me on a Flexi one year tariff from September 1st. 2023 . My agreed DD was £8.42 / £219 credit at inception . My usage was inline with the projected costs . To my anger , Scottish Power intend to raise my DD to £20.51 ( 1st. July / 1st. August ) . This is totally against the review on DD's made by  Ofgem . Any other customer who has a similar problem can inform Scottish Power that they will cancel the forthcoming DD's , and pay from existing credit balance & let Scottish Power chase after a possible very small Debt . Energy Ombudsman agrees .

With Octopus you can change your direct debit online.
  • Before cancelling an energy DD it’s advisable to ensure you won’t be subjecting yourself to higher rates in doing so - Typically energy supplies give a small discount to those paying by Direct Debit and they can take this discount off if cancelled. Generally the best way forward is to have a polite discussion at first explaining why the increase is not necessary, and then escalating as appropriate if needs be.

Cancelling it altogether is usually best kept as a last resort if going through the proper channels fails.  Alternatively, other suppliers may allow you to manage the DD yourself online and most will offer what’s known as a “Variable Direct Debit” where the bill is simply paid in full each month and no credit balance is retained by the supplier (while still keeping the DD discount).

What is your account status today ?   The standing charge will be eating in to that credit by around £7 per month without taking any energy use into account.  DDs should be set to bring the account balance to £0 at the end of the review period so what do you think the DD should be set at ? Are SP getting and using regular monthly reads either smart or manual ?

Hello, have you sorted this? I’ve had nothing but issues in the past with Scottish power, agreed multiple DD’s, for them to be taking a large amount more than agreed.

i thought I had it sorted until I’ve checked my credit file yesterday to see they’ve put me into an arrangement to pay..

this wasn’t the agreement, I’ve been with them 4 years and fought for the last 3 years to get a Direct debit set up with them.

im seriously thinking of taking them to small claims.
