The account is closed but Natwest advised that they will still accept payments to a closed account and the payment wouldn't have been rejected because the account was closed.
Normally accounts are initially frozen to allow credits still to be received. If the account has been closed then possible the receipt has bounced/ being held pending allocation.

Thanks all for the comments. Apologies for late reply , I was actually at the funeral yesterday.

I have been speaking to the bereavement team at Natwest, although I need to speak to them again today because...

...whilst I was at the funeral, I missed a call from Ovo to inform me that a cheque has been authorised and will be posted out to me tomorrow. It seems to have been prompted by my last question to them which was 'Can you confirm the refund has been paid to the account ending 'xxxx1234' ?

Now  call me cynical, but I'm thinking someone in Ovo has read that, double-checked and realised that it had been sent to the wrong account. I don't know this for fact, as they didn't reply to that last email and there was no explanation in the voicemail they left.

So, I'll wait for the cheque - and hope it's been made out to me and not my mother... !

Not being cynical. The logical explanation is that the funds would have eventually found there way back to OVO. At which point a cheque would have been issued. Straightforward , simply the world works. No conspiracy theories.
