House has two halves built in two different dates

The front half of my house is old and was built in the 18th century however it has a two storey extension of equal size at the back that is approximately 20 years old.  When obtaining quotes for buildings insurance, what date should I use?

I'd use the older date and before buying confirm with the insurer/broker in question that it is the best approach... might be different if the new build was 5x the size or it was just the original front facia left and the rest was brand new.

You'd have to think that the older part would be a higher insurance risk, simply due to its age I would have thought, so I'd go with the older date. When I've had quotes for my buildings insurance it's never even occured to me to use anything other than the original build date, even though we've had later extensions.

Better to be overinsured than underinsured and give the company something to wiggle off the hook with should you have to put in a claim.
