Am sorry that you found it abrasive, but you had already stated once that you thought that the fine was £100, and when told this was not the case you again stated your thoughts, this time basing them on a mysterious 'someone'. Hardly contributing to the discussion or even acknowledging the fact that your thoughts had been corrected by almost every subsequent post. Suggesting the fine is £100 for not registering may be enough for some people not to bother and take the risk, when in fact these people when caught will face a substantially higher fine as a result, and will be judged very differently to someone just registering a little late. This was the point I was attempting to make, not accusing you of suggesting people shouldn't register.Do You Twitter?

Generally HMRC fines are not greater than the tax owed

That is a very useful reference, thank you. MSE does not allow users to post links to their own sites, however I do feel that the Mod team should be approached to see whether this link can be added to the sticky thread about useful hints and tips at the top of this board.
I'll contact them and see if it can be allowed and then when we get similar questions in the future we can just refer them to the sticky thread.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Soolin
Greatly appreciated.
You will see that I am strictly anonymous and do not ever take on ebayers as clients.
I set the page up because I got bored of typing the information in it.
Other accountants regularly pick me up on missing bits and where appropriate I include their views.
I keep it up to date as a part of my CPD and am more than happy for all and sundry to refer to it, print it out and take highlighter pens to it!!
I'd be delighted to see it pinned

I WAS fined £100 for late registration and this is the fine they impose. They told me when I called to tell them I would be fined but I explained in a letter (as I had done on the phone) that because I was not earning that much (at that time around £25 a week) I did not think I had to register but I was wrong. They accepted my explaination and the fine was waived, it was before any income was declared too so for all they knew I could have owed them £5,000. the money will become payable when you put your self assessment in. Make sure you keep all of your records.
I was also advised to pay my Class 2 NIC because it covered me for benefits should I get sick or pregnant. So I pay that too.0
